Current Events Have You Down?

There are things going on in our world right now that many find unsettling. Some people are worried. Some are fearful. Some are sad. Some are just downright angry.

The important thing for us to remember is that, while a Christian has a kind of loyalty to an earthly country, our higher allegiance is to a heavenly country. Our true home is a heavenly one and that is where our heart should be.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. - Matthew 6:21 ESV

If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. Colossians 3:1-3 KJV

Remember also that people in power come and go, nations rise and fall, but the LORD stays the same (Malachi 3:6) and remains compassionate.

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
    his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
    great is your faithfulness. - Lamentations 3:22-23 ESV

Paul knew that despite the turmoil going on around him, he would go to be with God when GOD ordained, and that nothing would prevent him from spending eternity with his Lord and Savior. He wrote:

The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory for ever and ever. - 2 Timothy 4:18 ESV

We will end with one more verse of Scripture, an exhortation from the Apostle Paul to look intently at the unseen, not on what we can only see with our physical eyes:

So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. -2 Corinthians 4:18 NIV

Loyal to your earthly country? Sure. Obey authority? Yes - we are commanded to do so. (Romans 13:1) Do what you can to make the place you live better? Absolutely.

But in this, I pledge my allegiance (and heart) to the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. (John 1:29) How about you?
